Problem & Solution
Parents who have a child who has newly been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes might be feeling as if their whole world has just come crashing down. They may feel overwhelmed and anxious and ask, “Is this the end of life as we know it?” I know these feelings all too well. I’ve been there. At the age of eight, my daughter Emily was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Just one year later, our two-year-old son was also diagnosed with T1D. To understand this diagnosis better, I scrambled to pull resources together.
This course was designed to help consolidate the essential information parents need to face the challenges type 1 diabetes presents. Throughout the course, parents will find answers to some of their most pressing questions regarding insulin, equipment, nutrition, possible complications, and support. As they explore each of these topics, they will have the opportunity to check their knowledge. These knowledge checks are scenario-based, so they can immediately apply what they have learned to situations that might simulate their real-life scenario.

Outcome
By the end of the course, parents should feel confident that they have the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to navigate the journey they are about to embark on. They will better understand the different types of insulin and will be able to determine which is best for their child. They will confidently be able to make a wise decision as to what equipment is best to help manage their child’s diabetes. They will know what foods their child can eat without worrying about their blood sugar going sky-high. They will be prepared for three of the most common complications experienced with type 1 diabetes. They can even download a quick reference guide that will help remind them of action steps to take, especially in an emergency. Finally, they will have access to the diabetes community, which can be a source of tremendous support. I hope this course will serve as a compass that will guide parents as they begin managing their child’s type 1 diabetes.
MY PROCESS
I began this process by first writing a learning objective. Once I determined what I wanted learners to know by the end of the course, I used the backward design process to accomplish the goal. I started by researching the five categories (insulin, equipment, nutrition, complications, and support) featured in the course and then began to compose a lesson plan. I then revised this information as I created the storyboard for the learning experience. With the storyboard at my fingertips, I began to bring the course to life using the tools available in Articulate Rise 360 to develop the final product.
Text-Based Storyboard
As I entered the development phase of the course, the storyboard played a vital role in acting as my guide. Pictured below, you will find the first seven pages of the twenty-five-page storyboard. This portion features the content and visual and technical notes through lesson two.

Full Development
As I worked through the development phase, I found making some changes to my original plans necessary. I wanted to ensure that I offered variety in how the user interacted with the material. In addition to being engaging, I also wanted to ensure that the learning experience was intuitive and informative. Please click on the buttons below to view the finalized products.

Course: Type 1 Diabetes - Now What?
My Role: Researcher, Writer, Designer, Developer
Tools Used: Articulate Rise 360, Google Slides
Purpose: The course is intended to be used by parents with a child newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Parents can work through the course at their leisure since it is self-paced. They might find it helpful to occasionally refer back to the course to access the informative resources featured.
Reference Guide - Diabetes Complications: Be in the Know
My Role: Researcher, Writer, Designer, Developer
Tools Used: Canva
Purpose: Upon completing the course, parents can download the reference guide featuring three common complications with type 1 diabetes: hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and diabetic ketoacidosis. In the event of a diabetic emergency, no one has time to go on the internet and search out the signs, symptoms, and treatment of possible complications their child might be experiencing. The reference guide provides parents with the necessary information they might need at a moment’s notice, helping them deal with the emergency effectively.

RESULTS & TAKEAWAYS
This project allowed me to work with a tool I had never used before, Articulate Rise 360. I enjoyed exploring the different features that Articulate Rise offers. However, at times, I found myself limited in how I wanted to present things. While Articulate Rise provides some opportunities for customization, it is less customizable than Articulate Storyline. One of the most significant benefits of using Articulate Rise is the ease of use since most of the “programming” is built-in with the features. Thus, I was able to develop this course in a shorter period of time.
